He might not be everyone’s first choice to listen to, but the news that a new 60′s radio station called Absolute Radio 60′s has banned Cliff Richard’s songs for ‘not being cool enough doesn’t sit right with me.
To be banned from a station playing music from your own era?! Ooh, harsh. Who has the right to say, for example that someone should be listening to the Beatles than Sir Cliff?!
Since when did we start taking choice away? It might not be cool to admit to liking him, but come on, he’s certainly been successful over the years and obviously has a fan base hiding out there somewhere, so why should they be told they’re not allowed to listen to his music?
If we’re getting in the game of banning music, how about this lot for starters.
-Manufactured bands who all sound the same like One Direction, and have a collective age of approximately 35.
- Rap music where they just talk their way through an entire song. Oh, and for the Love of God, pull your kecks up.
- Hardcore dance music that just has a boom boom boom techno plinky plonk thing going on – guaranteed to induce migraines in anyone sane.
Music is a personal thing, and what some people love, others will hate. So to ban some in favour of others is ridiculous. If it was up to me we’d have an 80′s station playing old cheese music like Rick Astley, Bananrama, etc, and then a cool rock station churning out stuff like Bon Jovi, Queen and Aerosmith all day.
I don’t expect others to agree with me though, as we all have different tastes. So leave the Cliff fans alone and let them have their music played as well. After all, life would be very boring if we all liked the same thing, wouldn’t it?!

You’re so right Wendy. This has happened with Cliff before – he was banned from Radio 1 a few years ago, I think I’m right in saying, because his music was considered to be too old fashioned. I’m not a Cliff fan, but I still don’t think he should be banned – I don’t think anyone should unless their lyrics are going to be found offensive. I would love an 80s stations – I’d never get any work done though – I’d be too busy boogying!
An 80′s station would be brilliant! I don’t think it’s fair to ban people, everyone likes different things. Something for everyone, that’s what is needed.
