For the past two or three years, me and the two small people have enjoyed finding small toys and packing as many nice things we can find into a shoebox.
Why? Well, because every child deserves lots of nice things to open at Christmas, and a sparkly wrapped Christmas box full of goodies is one way of spreading a bit of cheer.
We usually start by buying things from around September onwards, things they like to play with in this house. Stuff like:
-bouncy balls
- felt tips
-writing paper to draw on
- sheets of stickers
-toy cars
-cuddly toys (ssh don’t tell the eldest that I’ve let his cuddly toy obsession out – yes, he still loves all his teddies
)
-big box of sweets (always a winner)
We’re finding it more of a challenge this year though as we’ve decided to do a girl box (previously we’ve always done a boy box.)
Challenge because with a house full of boys, I’m finding it a lot harder to imagine the kinds of things small girls would like to receive.
I’m used to boy toys!
So far we’ve got:
-The obligatory big box of sweeties to scoff
- felt tips
-little notepad
- a ball
- some toiletry type stuff like a face flannel
er, and that’s about it.
There’s still time to get cracking though, as boxes can be taken to your local drop off point between November the 1st and 18th.
Now I suppose I’d better get wrapping the box up in sparkly stuff and adding more lovely things to it….

you can get some sweet mini playdoh sets which would be good for a boy or girl.
I’ve just signed up to do a box too. It’s a lovely idea!
Never thought of playdoh!
Going to get some sheets of stickers, a teddy and some nice practical stuff like a woolly hat and gloves next…
You’ve just reminded me we haven’t done ours yet! Ours has to be in on 5th November.
It’s become our half term ritual. The two oldest get a little budget each (I do one on behalf of the toddler!), then we spend an afternoon at the shops and they make up a box for a boy/girl of their own age. It’s a nice counter-balance to the mounting pre-Christmas “wants”, and I’m glad to think that some other children will have something to smile about come Christmas morning
We’ve just finished ours today for a girl. First box we have ever done. Only have a girl so would struggle with a boy box so you are doing well. Few ideas for you hair clips, hair bands, comb, necklace. I’ll try and pop a photo on twitter later at you
Thanks, will look out for any pics!
what a lovely idea!!
Fabulous to see you involved, I’m travelling and blogging for OCC in early December if you fancy following my journey. With regard to girl boxes we put in hair accessories, cheap jewelery, small dolls, hats, scarves, socks, playing cards, skipping rope, small craft kits, teddy, musical instruments, beach ball, still wrapped macdonald toys and loads more.
Here is a post I did a couple of years back and shows a picture of the kind of stuff we were packing – http://mdplife.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/operation-christmas-child.html
