When you’re forced to sit round and make small talk at half 9 in the morning while dozens of children run around in circles screeching, the only thing that gets you through it is a nice hot cup of tea or coffee.
One toddler group has made the news today as they have put a ban on hot drinks being served in the room hosting the play group.
They’re now not allowed to drink any hot drinks unless it’s in a separate room away from their children.
I can well believe it, as when I went to a toddler group a couple of years ago, they were serving out cups of tea in cups with a lid that you had to sip through.
I need long big slurps at that time in a morning, not a sip out of a baby cup. Why not just put it in a baby’s bottle and feed us that way?! It’s the same thing!
I didn’t last long there, and soon found one that had normal mugs and treated grown ups like adults, not another toddler.
All this health and safety drives me mad. Whatever happened to common sense? It’s a wonder we’re all still alive as adults as there was none of this rubbish around when I was small.
It’s not rocket science to keep your hot drink away from small people.
We don’t need baby sippy cups or banned from drinking hot drinks.
Should we all be sipping our tea and coffee out of Tommy Tippee type beakers at home then,Ā in case the small ones go near it?
No, we have something like common sense that we use.
I just wish the idiots that make up these rules find some sense and spare brain cells of their own and start using them, instead of treating us like babies ourselves…
I would not survive that toddler group without a morning cup of java to help me along. Why not have the coffee/tea in a travel cup, they have lids that don’t easily pop off.
rubbish isn’t it….we have a ‘Coffee Stop’ that runs just before pre-school in the morning where parents (Mums mainly ) can get together for a chat & a coffee….except we can no longer drink coffee (or tea) for this reason! We all still go in there though for Tuesday Coffee-less stop….it saves waiting out in the cold for an extra 10 minutes!
Are they going to ban children going into cafes? Thats far more dangerous because there are people there not used to having kids around so will put their drinks within reach and not keep an eye on them.
That’s just it, where do you stop?! As you say, coffee shops and children don’t mix.
Let’s ban children from coffee shops in case they get spills on them. Or just sell cold drinks and rename all the coffee shops the Juice Shop. š
I agree, it is ridiculous. Reminding parents to be careful is one thing (I am surprised more people aren’t aware of the results of scolds and carrying drinks over the top of small people) but banning hot drinks is just silly.
I recently tried to go into a cafe but there was a sign saying no buggies. As the cafe was empty I asked if I could bring the buggy in and was told no (because of health and safety). Personally a toddler being set free in a cafe while balancing a baby on my knee would be far more dangerous). I ended up finding somewhere else that was quite busy but allowed parents with buggies in, I wonder why they were getting such good trade?!
dear me health and saftey has gone abit mad these days, its bringing up a generation of children who have never been able to learn essential lessons in life because so much has been hidden away from them :o/
Oh yes. By the time I had my second child I about 3 places that I preferred going to on the basis of hot drinks being allowed. Give us some pleasure please. It’s early, it’s noisy and we’re talking ‘la la la’ the least we need is a coffee.
The silly thing is that all the pen pushers survived their childhoods surrounded by hot drinks and even smoking. Yet another victim of compensation culture.
You won’t be able to have hot drinks in a cafe soon!
BTW – I don’t know whether to apologise or congratulate you but I’ve tagged you. Please don’t feel obliged to join in but do if you want some fun! You tweeted me a few times so I hope you don’t mind the ‘next move’. Sounds like dating!! Have a good weekend

Weirdly, I shall have to agree with the hot drinks thing! At our toddler group, some parents/carers wander with hot cups of coffee, with 3 year olds tearing around the place on tricycles, tots falling into adult legs and general chaos.
I’m not all for banning hot drinks, but when you’re so knackered you just want to drink a cup of coffee, it’s easy to forget that other children are tearing around like little monkeys, with little regard for knocking an adult with a hot drink in hand.
Keep the drinks separate I say!
Then they should tell the dithering half asleep people (sounds like me, lol) to be careful with their cups of tea. š
Do they drink in separate rooms at home when the children are playing? I’m sure they must drink in the same room at times and just use a modicum of common sense when it comes to drinks!
That’s the way I see it anyway š
